Objectives for a new "ZipLinux" Live CD.

There are many good Linux Live CDs.  One of the reasons for starting this project is to create a new distro that will be even easier for new Linux users to use and make it as nearly fool-proof as possible.  Here are first-draft objectives:

  1. Upon insert of CD into a running Windows box, an "auto-run" message should appear with a brief overview explaining how to start a Linux live CD.

  2. Upon re-start (re-boot) of the computer a new splash screen should appear with a custom background and a brief introductory message in a framed listing key ZipLinux benefits and what to expect as the Live CD start-up progresses ... ideally with a progress bar indicating estimated total start-up time and current lapsed time. Below the progress bar, include a URL address for ZipLinux.com

  3. Zero interruptions. No need to interrupt start-up to ask what keyboard. Assume US keyboard which is the default anyway.

  4. Provide a sequence of images with inset screen-shot examples and descriptions appearing every 10-seconds during the entire start-up process. Never a "black" screen leaving users to wonder what happened or wondering "Is it still running?"

  5. Once start-up is finished and the opening "desktop" display appears, there should be just three desktop icons:

    • Start here (click this icon and Firefox will open a local html file describing key Linux features and benefits with a thumbnail screen shot that can be clicked to open a larger image that explains each icon on the desktop plus links to click with step-by-step explanations of the most frequently used applications. (Assuming this live CD should automatically achieve a wireless connection, users could then also click on several provided URL links.)

    • Install ZipLinux to flash key (click icon to install from CD to a flash key)

    • Install ZipLinux to HD (click icon to install to Hard Drive)
NOTE: When a ZipLinux installation is selected, it should do a complete install just like the Live CD startup with ZERO interruptions.  No prompts for keyboard to choose.  No prompts for network connection options.  And no prompts for either root or user setup.  Instead, the installation should be completely finished with no interruptions and with the new user automatically logged in as user "Guest" with no password require and "Root" with the password "root."  Instructions should then be provided to replace the "Guest" user with a new user login name; and provide instructions to change the root password.

Screenshots will be add asap.

Please share your ideas and suggestions to make ZipLinux a really good live CD.
